Starbucks Double Walled Mug

This ceramic insulated travel mug comes from a need for a reusable cup that uses existing brand iconography, the Starbucks paper cup.
My concept was to create a new translation of this recognizable icon as an double walled ceramic vessel with an attachable lid.
We went thought several rounds of prototyping, using 3d printing and cast resin pieces prior to final injection moulding for the polypropylene lid.
One of the largest issues to overcome was dealing with tolerances for two different materials. The high tolerances of the plastic lid needed to accomodate the variation of the bone-china body. This was achieved through a few different sized silicone gaskets and good quality control on the facotry floor.
This double walled insulated ceramic mug has become a cornerstone product in the Starbucks stores with several variations of both art and lids since the launch in 2009.
